Images have always played an important role in my life. For as long as I can remember, I was drawn more to images than to written words. Images cause emotions to be released in me. I grew up near the coast of Zeeland (Netherlands) but the connection was swiftly broken by the moving of my parents far from the sea.
As a young adult, I was reunited with the sea. Falling in love with every aspect of it: surfing, diving and freediving. The sea gives you a sense of ‘living in the moment’ and makes everything else not so important for a while. In the sea, you’re always part of it, not just a mere spectator.
Shortly after my studies, I had the opportunity to live in Perth, West-Australia for a while. that’s where the flame for sea and surf photography was ignited. This flame grew out to a passion that can no longer be ignored.
With my images, I try to look beyond the apparent. I’m looking for energy as well as tenderness and subtility. Colors play an important part as do strong contrast, movement and of course, everything revolves around “the light”.
Through my images, I hope that I can awaken emotions. The same as what I experience during the moments I’m in the sea.
